Denver Coin Expo

The Denver Coin Expo was held this past weekend from Thursday May 5 to Saturday May 7.  I had a chance to attend on Friday and was dismayed by the slim pickings.  Apparently another dime collector beat me to the punch by scooping up several lots on Thursday.

I still took the time to visit with my favorite dealers.  Scott and Jason did not have anything.  Gerry and Eugene had several coins, including 2 that I was interested in purchasing.

1814 10c JR-3, R2 (NGC, XF40) - This was a really nice coin that recently came to market at Heritage Auctions.  I had bid up to $400 and it hammered for $587.50 (including buyers premium).  The dealer had it listed for $695 and was only willing to budge to $685 on price.  I decided not to pursue this coin further.

1824/2 10c JR-1 R2 (PCGS, G6, CAC) - While a relatively low grade, this coin was very pleasing to look at.  It had a good strike, honest even wear with the host of digs and scratches I would expect from a coin in Good condition.  The price again was the issue.  The dealer was asking for $185 which represents high retail.  I would expect to pay around $120 for this coin and we were just too far apart for me to ask for a discount.

It was my first show to walk away empty handed.  I was a little disappointed, but that leaves room in the budget for future purchases.
