Stephen Album Sale #26, Lot 1818 (September 15-17)
GUPTA: Kumaragupta I, ca. 414-455, AV dinar (7.32g). Mitch-4839. King on horseback, riding right / Lakshmi seated on wicker stool, feeding grapes to peacock, removed from jewelry & heavily worn, Very Good.
Estimated Value$300 - 500
Typically, I would stay away from ex jewelry coins and I would certainly be willing to wait for higher grade specimens, but in the world of Ancient India coinage, any specimen is worth considering.
My Dad has an Extremely Fine specimen of a Kumaragupta I horseman type dinar. On his the Goddess is sitting alone on the reverse (Class I), the Horse faces Right, Horseman is holding no weapons and there are no circular stars on the horse's haunch (Variety C).
By contrast, the Goddess in this case is feeding a peakcock (Class II), the Horse faces Right, the Horseman is holding a bow and the Goddess has a bunch of grapes (Variety A).
The coin is certainly heavily worn with facial features non existent on the obverse and reverse and most of the script worn. I agree that it is genuine and would gladly pay the bullion price ($300) plus a moderate numismatic premium ($100-$200)
UPDATE; September 19th - This lot ended up hammering for $850 ($998.75 with Buyer's Premium). As you can imagine, I was thoroughly priced out.
