Stephen Album once again brought a nice selection of Gupta Dynasty coinage to auction. 4 lots from Samudragupta, 4 lots from Chandragupta II and 1 lot from Kumaragupta.
I was interested in three lots
2170 - Samudragupta - my upper limit $1000, hammered for $1300
2172 - Samudragupta - (RR, reclining pose) - my upper limit $1500, hammered for $2800
2177 - Kumaragupta I - my upper limit was $750, hammered for $1000
I was on the phone for bidding and quickly passed on the first 2 lots. I stretched to $950 on the 3rd lot and should have considered a cut bid, but decided to pass on that lot as well.
Bidding was strong with most lots exceeding the estimate by roughly 2X. I look forward to continuing my education on this era of rare coins.
