Strong Prices for Shipwreck Coins

According to the consignor, these pieces originate form the "Taj Mahal Treasure Wreck" (sunk in 1702 off the Great Basses Reef, Sri Lanka). While no official COA accompanies this lot, the consignor has provided a photograph of the original larger clump, which now finds itself as depicted in our images. Discovered by Sir Arthur C. Clarke in the 1960's, this merchant ship carried thousands of silver Rupees minted by Aurangzeb Alamgir, the last great Mogul emperor of India and son of Shah Jahan, creator of the Taj Mahal. A copy of "The Treasure of the Great Reef" by Arthur Clarke accompanies the lot.

Multi-Coin "Admiral Gardner" Shipwreck Clump ND Genuine (photo certificate) NGC, 157gm. Salvaged from the "Admiral Gardner" (sunk in 1809 off the Goodwin Sands, Southeast England). An eye-catching pile-stack of coins, neatly arranged as the day they were first packed into the ship's cargo, but now wrapped by coral and incrustation from the nearly 200 years submerged. On one side, we can see a 20 Cash obverse, while the other side shows a reverse with a clear 1808 date.

The Admiral Gardner was a British East India Company (EIC) ship wrecked in January 1809. Bound to Madras and Bengal, the ship was lost in the tortuous Goodwin Sands right after launching voyage. A large amount of EIC coins were lost with the cargo, later rediscovered in the 1980's when salvaging took place before the site was put under the Protection of Wrecks Act.

21223 - $1100

Typical uncertified rupees are trading at $10-$20 and the shipwreck coins without authenticity are in the $100 range which is fair.  The large and small clumps really surprised me.  They would make excellent displays.
