February 2026 - South Suburban Coin Club - History of the Three-Cent Piece

Eric Milton gave a talk on three-cent pieces minted from 1859-1889.

Coin was also known as the trime.

  • Smallest coin ever minted by the US Mint.
  • Had lots of minting issues resulting in (4) different types.
    • die clashing
    • weak strikes
  • Workingman's wages were less than 10 cents/hour so three cents was a significant amount of money
  • Originally 75% silver and 25% copper to discourage hoarding
  • Mintages vary widely and were mostly proofs the last 10 years.
  • "Shinplasters" was term for collectors of fractional currency
